Deriza is a leather brand based in İzmir, Türkiye, bringing together leather engineering, design and production experience. From a Student Project to Deriza
Deriza’s story began in 2011, when its founder, Recep Aycan, was in his fourth year studying Leather Engineering at Ege University. A project organised by the Aegean Exporters’ Associations invited leather engineering students to work with fine arts students from Dokuz Eylül University and develop a design concept centred on leather.
The team Recep Aycan was part of placed third in the competition. Following that achievement, an opportunity arose to visit a leather fair in Italy in 2012. The designs on display, the different uses of leather and Italy’s creative fashion environment helped turn his university knowledge into an ambition to build his own brand.
The idea for Deriza took shape during that visit. His leather engineering education came together with an interest in design and a desire to work in production. The Deriza.com journey began in 2012 and gradually expanded to bring a range of leather products to customers.
Bringing Leather Knowledge into Design and Production
A leather engineering education encourages an understanding of a material beyond its colour and texture. Leather structure, thickness, processing and surface finish are considered alongside the requirements of the intended product. Working with design students provided an early opportunity to connect that technical knowledge with a product’s form and purpose.

Natural variations in the leather surface and the placement of individual pieces during cutting are also considered as part of the finished product’s appearance.
